Stick it to colds and flu naturally, with Chinese medicine!

This recent changeable weather we are seeing can impact the immune system in a big way. In the clinic we have seen many coughs and colds doing the rounds. Luckily Chinese medicine has a lot to offer in the way of treatment of coughs and colds. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can help to reduce the length and severity of a cold by restoring balance and gently encouraging the body to heal.

For those who may be exposed to bugs, having regular acupuncture treatments can strengthen the immune system as well boosting the immune system to prevent illness in the first place.

I’m here in the clinic on Monday from 9-2, ready to help you stay healthy and strong or to help your immune system kick any bugs which may be giving you grief. In the meantime, you can get stuck in to these cold-fighting, immune-boosting home remedies to help you stay strong and healthy:

  • Immune boosting honey, lemon and ACV tea:

Juice of half a lemon

1-2 tsp of Manuka honey

Apple cider vinegar to taste (if you’re new to ACV start with a small amount such as a tbsp)

Add the ingredients to a cup of boiling water and drink as a tea. Good for sore throats and is great if you’ve been exposed to a bug – drink up to three times a day post exposure.

  • Ginger and spring onion tea:

1 spring onion, white part only, sliced

Small knob of fresh ginger, sliced

Stir fry the ingredients in a small amount of water – just enough to keep the pan moist. Cook until the spring onion is soft and fragrant. Add ingredients to a cup of boiling water and drink as a tea. This tea is perfect for colds with the following symptoms: chills, sneezing, clear mucous, runny nose, watery eyes, stiff and sore neck and shoulders. It works to dispel cold from the channel system by inducing a sweat. After drinking rug up and sweat it out!
